Can PI Firms Advertise on ChatGPT? Where the Opportunity Stands Today

by Kalin Dudley | August 31, 2026

People are increasingly turning to ChatGPT for questions that your firm can answer, like what they should do after a car accident, whether they need a lawyer, and who pays their medical bills while their case is open. That is a high-intent moment, and it often happens before a potential client ever opens Google or picks up the phone. Advertising inside those conversations is a real opportunity for personal injury firms.

But can your firm advertise on ChatGPT today? For now, the answer is no. Legal services sit on OpenAI’s disallowed list, and the current published ad policy leaves no room to read it another way:

“Ads for legal advice, representation, or legal services offered to individuals or businesses are not permitted. This includes services related to immigration, personal injury, legal claims, or document preparation.”

The work we are currently doing for firms is focused on preparation. We recommend getting advertiser accounts registered and click-to-case tracking in place so a firm can launch the day the category opens. Approvals in the legal category are reviewed manually, one advertiser at a time, which rewards the firms that are already set up and waiting.

ChatGPT is answering questions from injured people in your market today, and it is naming firms it considers authoritative on their subject matter. When ads become available for legal services, firms caught flat-footed will be playing catch-up.

Why PI Firms Should Not Ignore Generative Search

As with many other emerging technologies, we have observed this pattern before. When Google Search matured, when Local Services Ads arrived, when Performance Max opened up, the firms that geared themselves toward the channel early paid less and got better returns than those who waited until it was a safe bet.

Thirty years in the PI category means we have the experience to know what an early channel looks like, and this one carries the markers. Firms gearing up for generative search now will be well positioned to capitalize before it becomes crowded.

Where Things Stand Today

OpenAI opened its advertising platform to US businesses earlier this year, and the rollout has moved quickly. Legal services have not moved with it. That prohibition covers the core practice areas a PI firm would want to promote.

That is not framed as a permanent bar. The policy lists legal services among the categories OpenAI may open to approved advertisers as the program matures. It does not give a date, so eligibility is something to be ready when this near-inevitable change occurs.

There is also a listed exemption on the current prohibition of firms using ChatGPT’s ad service. Under the same published policy on ad content, ads for general legal education or media may be allowed where no legal services are offered, and legal-themed podcasts and educational materials are named as examples.

What These Ads Look Like When They Run

For firms that already run paid search, the format will feel familiar. Here is how advertising in ChatGPT works in practice:

  • Text-based, like PPC. Ads appear at the bottom of a response, clearly labeled as sponsored and kept separate from the answer ChatGPT generates.
  • Answers stay independent. OpenAI keeps advertising from influencing its responses, which matters for a channel people are still learning to trust.
  • Privacy is protected. Advertisers never see users’ conversations or personal information, and performance is measured by aggregated results rather than by what any individual typed.

Targeting, reporting, and industry benchmarks are still developing, so this is an early-stage platform, and anyone claiming settled data on a channel this new is guessing.

Why This Is Not a Standalone Decision

A ChatGPT ad does not work in isolation, and neither does the visibility around it. When someone clicks, they land on your site and, in seconds, size up your firm against the same brand, reviews, and intake experience that shape every other channel.

On a media plan, those channels are separate line items. For the person deciding which firm to call, these coordinated points of contact form a single impression of your firm.

That is how we approach every new platform. On its own, a ChatGPT campaign is one more tool to integrate into a coordinated marketing strategy. Built to reinforce the brand your firm has already established across television, search, and social, it becomes part of how you grow your firm’s share of mind in the PI space.

Our Current Approach to Generative Search

We have spent three decades integrating traditional and digital channels into cohesive strategies for our clients, and ChatGPT will be another piece of that system rather than a standalone experiment. When the category opens, the firms that planned for it as part of a broader strategy will convert that attention more effectively than firms adding one more disconnected marketing expense.

We bring PI firms the strategies and platforms that move cases, and we stay transparent about where each one stands. For optimizing your firm’s visibility on ChatGPT, that currently means prioritizing two things.

Getting Your Firm Set Up and Ready

We are already positioning firms to launch the moment legal advertising opens, rather than building from scratch while competitors pull ahead.

The groundwork is simple:

  • An advertiser account in place. Your firm is registered and ready to go live.
  • Click-to-case tracking. You can measure what the channel produces, all the way to signed cases.
  • Content that earns a mention. Strong pages give ChatGPT a reason to name your firm when it answers questions in your market.

Several of our firms are currently working through these steps, which is the best way to ensure we’re ready the moment opportunity strikes.

Winning the Answers ChatGPT Gives Today

The way people describe legal problems to ChatGPT is different from how they search on Google. In ChatGPT, they describe the whole situation: the accident, the injury, the insurance call they just got. That level of detail signals a real need, and it arrives early in the decision-making process, often before a potential client has settled on which firm to call.

That’s why we are focused on the visibility that is available right now. When someone asks ChatGPT about an accident, the model pulls from and cites real sources, and the firms it names are typically the ones whose content answers the questions injured people are asking. Earning that visibility takes a connected network of authoritative content across your site, the depth and consistency that large language models tend to prefer when they choose which firm to cite.

Compliance Built-In from the Start

Optimizing your content for generative search now will prove even more valuable going forward. It compounds now, building the authority that AI search rewards and feeding everything measured in your closed-loop reporting. It also positions your firm for what comes next: when paid placement opens to legal services, you will be ready to slot ChatGPT ads into your marketing mix from an established foundation of authority rather than starting cold.

Attorney advertising rules apply to all of this, and they vary by state. Any campaign we build for your firm is designed to withstand that scrutiny. Three decades of specialized work in the PI category means our services are built specifically for firms like yours. We also understand the importance of treating compliance as a foundational part of your online footprint.
