Behind the Out of the Box Shoot: How cj Advertising Builds Creative That Cuts Through the Clutter

by cj Advertising | September 28, 2026

Generic legal advertising sounds like every other firm: a name, a promise, a phone number. cj Advertising’s recent Out of the Box shoot was built to break that pattern for ten clients who signed on for something different.

Why This Matters for PI Firms

Firms are spending more on TV and digital than ever, and much of that spend buys creative that blends together the moment it airs. When every ad in a market opens and closes in the same way, the firm with the most memorable creative makes an impression that sticks.

Standing out is a matter of having creative sharp enough that a viewer remembers your firm by name hours or days after seeing the ad. That’s why we brought ten client firms together for a single, ambitious production day.

The Idea Behind Out of the Box

Each campaign turns a familiar client concern into an exaggerated, larger-than-life situation, often using humor before the lawyer steps in with the answer that matters.

The humor gives viewers a reason to keep watching while the attorney delivers a clear, credible message about how the firm can help.

Three Concepts, One Goal

The shoot produced three distinct campaign concepts, each with a different tone but landing on the same point: your firm delivers when it matters most.

  • Coming Up Short: A series of comedic moments draws a parallel between everyday frustrations and the real consequences of coming up short on an injury claim. A kid too small for the rollercoaster, a stranded bathroom patron, and a driver out of gas all learn the same lesson before the lawyer steps in with the promise that counts: you will not get less than you deserve.
  • Searching for a Lawyer: A treasure hunter in a dusty antique shop follows a mysterious sound to a magic lamp. Instead of a genie and three wishes, the lamp delivers something better: a lawyer ready to help. Firms should not require a hunt to find them, and this concept makes that point memorable.
  • We Got This: A fast-paced string of mishaps shows people confidently attempting things they have no business attempting, from DIY dentistry to flying a plane. Each moment escalates until the lawyer steps in with the only answer that holds up: after a car accident, leave it to the professionals.

Three different worlds, one consistent close: when it counts, your firm is the one that delivers.

The Technology Behind the Concepts

Building three worlds this distinct in a single shoot took more than a soundstage. The production relied on a 36-foot by 13-foot LED virtual wall, wireless lighting control, and AI-generated environments built during pre-production specifically for that wall’s scale. The art department then built practical props to match those digital backdrops, so a treasure hunter’s antique shop or a dentist’s office feels physical even where the background behind it is virtual.

The shoot required close coordination among the creative team, production crew, and technicians running the virtual wall. Camera, lighting, prompter, and logging also had to remain synchronized throughout the day. That is what a fully integrated production team makes possible: one shoot day producing three campaigns that each look and feel like their own world.

What Clients Took Away

Client reaction to the shoot was immediate, and it went well beyond the concepts themselves. Personalized touches made the difference: a client’s own outdoor artwork appeared on the billboard set; a firm’s ads worked into the magazines on the dentist’s office set. Details like these turned a shared, multi-client shoot day into something that still felt built for each firm’s own market.

What This Means for Your Firm’s Creative

A single well-planned studio day can capture more than twenty scripts. That gives your firm a substantial content library while consolidating the work that would otherwise require several separate shoots.

Out of the Box shows how one well-developed concept can support a full media schedule while giving audiences something distinctive to remember.

A strong concept helps your firm get more value from its production budget. With careful planning and an integrated team, that concept can become a full campaign delivered at scale and on schedule.

Out of the Box is one example of what happens when creative, production, and technology all work from the same brief. If your firm’s advertising needs a concept built to cut through instead of blending in, let’s talk about what that could look like in your market.
